I used to sweat a lot. It was quite a problem when I was still in school. I went to the doctor to ask if she knew a remedy for me to stop sweating and smelling as much. She gave me a very agressive liquid antiperspirant that I had to rub under my armpits every other day. It made my armpits itch like crazy and I got red bumps as a result of my inflammated skin. She told me the last solution for me would be to get botox injected in my armpits to block the sweat from reaching my pores. That didn’t sound really healthy to me, the idea of my body wanting to sweat and botox preventing my body from doing that. So I got back to conventional deodorant again. I think I tried every deodorant brand out there, some worked well for a week, and then my body got used to the product and I would start to smell again. Eventually I found something that worked GREAT. After a year of using that deodorant and not sweating at all, I discovered the horrible toxic ingredients that were preventing me from sweating. I’ll link some articles about toxic ingredients in conventional deodorants below.
So, I got on the internet to look for natural deodorants and discovered I can make my own! I still use the same recipe to this day and it prevents me from smelling everyday!
First, I found a recipe with baking soda, cornstarch and coconut oil. It worked really well, although the cornstarch made the deodorant a little harsh to rub on my skin. It kinda felt like I was rubbing sandpaper against my skin. Where I live it’s quite cold most of the time, my coconutoil stays solid during the year. So I tought, why not leave the cornstarch out and make a two ingredient deodorant!
My amazing two ingredient deodorant:
4 parts coconut oil
1 part baking soda
Optional: a few drops of essentail oils of your choice, because they smell amazing
I rub this on my skin every morning after I take a shower. I keep it in a glass jelly jar. You can use as much baking soda as you want, depending on how much you sweat/smell. This is just what works for me personally. Use more baking soda if you want a strong working deodorant, use less if you have really sensitive skin.
When I first used this mixture, it felt like it didn’t do anything at all. It took two or three weeks for the deodorant to really start doing it’s job. I think my body had a litttle transition period because of all the toxic deodorants I had used every day, for years.
Oh and if you don’t want to make your own deodorant, HippyPits has three amazing deodorants with beautiful ingrediënts, so definitely check them out!
It feels so great not putting any harmful products on my skin to sit there for the whole day. I hope this opened your eyes to conventional deodorants and I hope you will try my DIY! Respect your body and treat yourself as you would treat a newborn baby.
